Trauma and PTSD

Trauma therapy for adults in Michigan

Something happened, or kept happening, and part of you is still bracing for it. You might not even call it trauma. You just know it's still with you.

What this can feel like day to day

  • You're on alert even when things are calm.
  • A tone of voice, a smell, or a date on the calendar can knock you off balance.
  • You go numb or pull away when people get close.
  • You stay busy so you don't have to feel it.
  • You know it wasn't your fault, and part of you still doesn't believe that.
  • Sleep, focus, or trust is harder than it used to be.

How I work with trauma

We start by building enough steadiness that you can notice what's happening inside without getting swept away. You don't have to tell the whole story before you're ready.

With AEDP, we pay attention to what comes up as you talk, like a held breath or the urge to shut down, and we make room for the feelings underneath. With IFS, we get to know the parts of you that learned to protect you, like the part that stays on guard or the part that goes numb.

When a specific memory still feels charged, we may use EMDR or Brainspotting. I'll explain what we're doing and why, and we'll adjust the pace together.

EMDR is one of three individual trauma-focused therapies recommended for PTSD in the 2023 VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline. What the research says

Changes to look for

Everyone's pace is different. Here are some changes you can watch for:

  • Less time on high alert
  • Reminders that sting without taking over your day
  • More self-trust
  • Feeling more present with the people you care about
  • More room for enjoyment
